Introduction of the Department

History

Our department of Pharmacology School of Medicine at Keio University always led pharmacology field in both educational and research aspects in Japan. Professor Abe researched on the structure of the pain-killer and fever for his entire life, because he wanted to help each patient who suffered from the sever pain and fever. Professor Abefs thoughtful philosophy toward patients based care is still carried over to this day. Professor Hosoya was researching on detecting the biomarker in the urine that was a revolutionary work in his time. Professor Kato researched on the concept of induction of enzyme for drug metabolism. It was a pioneering study of the drug interaction and the tailored medicine. Professor Nishimoto researched on the cure for Alzheimerfs disease and neurodegenerative disorders before we entered the aging society in early days. We will take over these excellent works that were done by many previous professors and manage the open mind department of Pharmacology.
We will also raise students and faculty members, contribute our research results to the society, and build the global relationships. Our goals are to suggest the new pharmacology based on the positive relationships with our patients, to establish the structure of cooperative researches and educational systems, and to lead the pharmacology of the 21st century.

Education

In our educational aspects, we want to provide some opportunities for the students where they meet new people who might inspire each other and discover the unique research themes. In our lectures and practices at the department, we teach students not only offering them the fundamental knowledge, but also educating them important methods of making their own decisions in order to practice the proper and prompt drug treatments when they become doctors in the future. For that reasons, we are going to promote the global exchange programs and to share the graduate and MD/PhD programs with other International universities and institutions.

Research

Mainly, we will explore these topics - membrane receptors, channels, and the structure and function analysis of transporters. In particular, we will focus on both dynamic structure and regulatory mechanisms in the protein. In addition to the traditional molecular biological methods, we will research molecular simulation and develop a new method based on biophysics. We believe this new method is necessary to understand the complex characteristics of the life phenomena.

Contribution to the Society

We hope to contribute a better future to other people and the globe through our educations and researches. Our goal is to raise young doctors and researchers who have abilities of achieving as research and clinical leaders internationally wide. We will do our best to provide new medicines and the structure of individualized medical cares based on our results of research projects.
